Our July App of the Month, HISTORY HERE™, is a great roadside companion for summer road trips. HISTORY HERE™ is an interactive guide to thousands of historic locations across the United States, brought to you by the History channel. This app will get you in the mood for some extended summer learning about many locations around you, as well as many travel destinations.
HISTORY HERE™ is a location/context-aware service that helps users discover surrounding historical sites by using their current location, or gives them the option of exploring other locations around the U.S. by searching the city or zip code. Tapping the red pins pulls up information on the site, which is generated by history.com experts rather than detailing generic content from Wikipedia. In addition to the information about the place, some of the locations have a website, phone number and picture displayed. Select locations even have video content available to stream straight from history.com. Another cool feature the app offers is the option to share any of your discoveries through Facebook, Twitter, or email.
A quick search from our office led us to find that Threadgill’s, a restaurant just north of us, was the first place to obtain a beer license in the county and was where Janis Joplin got her start. I hardly got this tidbit out before someone in our office started squealing something about o’ Lord and a Mercedes Benz! We love how the History Channel makes discovering so accessible. With new content being frequently added, this app gives users a great way to stumble upon points of interest anywhere life takes them.
