The Top 5 Tech News Stories and Breakthroughs of the Month

1. Ransomware is Costing Businesses Big Money There have been several large ransomware attacks these past couple of months—most notably the WannaCry attack. These attacks are costing businesses both big and small, not only in paying the ransom but also in getting their systems back online. Google warns the ransomware is here to stay, so we recommend switching from an on-premise data center to the cloud to save money and beef up security.

2. Future of AI is Disputed By Leaders in Tech Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, and Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, publicly disputed the future of AI this month. Musk, an advocate of AI, believes the technology is evolving faster than we can manage its growth and needs more regulation, while Zuckerberg remains positive in his outlook about the future of AI. Artificial Intelligence is rapidly expanding into several platforms and technologies, so we will have to wait and see how the government and general population reacts to an increased presence.

3. Bezos Briefly Beats Out Gates as World’s Richest Person CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, saw his estimated wealth hit $90.9B on Thursday morning, briefly beating out Bill Gates by less than $500M as the world’s richest person. Bezos’ lead, although brief, can be attributed to Amazon stock prices opening up 1.6% on Thursday, adding a whopping $1.4B to the founder’s net worth. Amazon is continuing to disrupt the brick and mortar model, illustrated by their most recent 13.7B acquisition of Whole Foods.

4. Forbes Releases List of America’s Biggest Tech Hubs, By City This list was aggregated using three different factors: The amount of local tech job listings in 2017, amount of local tech job listings with “higher salary job titles”, and number of local tech workers in government jobs. The top two tech cities were as expected—San Jose and San Francisco, CA, but Austin, TX ranked number 3 on the list, beating out Seattle, WA.

5. iOS 11 Goes Beta and Gets Release Date The beta version of iOS 11 came out earlier this month, and a final version is expected to be rolled out at some point this fall. The beta version features instant markup, iPad keyboard shortcuts, a “Files” app, and cloud integration of iMessages to free up storage space on user devices.
